Friday s Child Is A Non Profit Program - 808 Words

For my Family Service Report, I met with and talked to Katie Conklin, Director of Services for the program Tuesday’s Child. Tuesday’s Child is a non-profit program that is operated out of DePaul College Prep. The program was established as a means to help parents with children ages 18-months to 6-years-old who are experiencing behavioral issues. The training is completed with both parent and child, and done with one-to-one peer assistance––with each family being paired with their own counselor. The individualized attention ensures that each family is given the appropriate amount of assistance to problem solve their specific needs. Tuesday’s Child’s mission statement is as follows: â€Å"Tuesday’s Child enables families to thrive through positive parent training, inclusive behavioral classrooms and support services. Our proven model impacts home, school, and the community.† With the majority of their student population ranging from ages 4-6, many of the behavioral issues that are seen at Tuesday’s Child are challenges such as children who are unable to take â€Å"no† for an answer, struggles with mealtime or bedtime, or difficulties in childhood peer interaction. The source of these behavioral issues ranges from diagnosable disorders such as autism (although Tuesday’s Child does not serve as a diagnosis center) to less specific issues with children who are verbal and smart, but don’t fit into behavioral norms. Answer: Introduction Gibbs reflection cycle helps us to reflect our own perspectives upon an incident, based on which we can undertake further activities. I was in-charge of a patient having bacterial infection, who was prescribed for IV intravenous gentamicin therapy. For this, initially I met all the performance criteria for satisfactory drug administarteion to the patient. I have cleaned my hands for reducing microbial load and read the patient notes for recognizing the exact dosage of IV medication that has to be administered. Before administering the drug, I introduced myself to the patient and confirmed the patients identity and allergies. I identified that he was prescribed for IV gentamicin and the dosage was also identified. I revealed the purpose of drug administration to the patient and the pros and cons of the medication administration, for complying with NSW health policy guidelines. After gathering all the sterilized equipments, I checked the dosage again from the note and calculated the co rrect drip factor. I have checked the cannula site and draw up correct volume of drug into syringe and adhered standard precautions. After checking the cannula site, correctly added the drug to IV fluid bag with standard precaution. I assessed the intravenous the cannula site and labeled the bag. However, I forgot to dispose the syringe in proper way, which was a major inconvenience in my medical practice. Explanation After sometimes, I came to the patient for checking his status; I identified my mistake and immediately removed the syringe from the patients bedside table. I was shocked upon addressing my inconvenience, because, this type of mistake, I do not expect. In my previous work experience, I never did this kind of mistake, as I know there is a high chance of cross-contamination from the syringe, to the patient as well as the other patients in the word. It raise the chance of infection in the patient, which should not be expected in our high standard nursing practice (Tashiro et al., 2013). Evaluation I always check things more than one time, before undertaking a medical action, especially those having a significant effect on patients health. Thus, I had built enough confidence for my perfections in work. In this context, I think this incident was the result of my overconfidence, which not right for my profession. Thus, from this incident, I have learned the importance of checking things carefully before and after completing a medical action in health care settings. The negative aspect of this incidence is that, I felt very bad for my performance and it reduced my confidence level significantly, however, the positive aspect is that from this incident, I have learnt a lot regarding the possible consequences and responsibility of a RN. Analysis Analyzing this incident, I had significant professional learning experience. I experienced a significant inconvenience in my work, which is not expected from a RN. Considering this analysis, I have revealed that I did not met my nursing competence criteria and ethical codes, which reduced the quality of health care services provided by our organization overall. It is because, from that syringe, a patient might acquire hospital acquired nosocomial infection, reducing the health outcomes of the patient. It reduced the quality standard of the hospital as a whole and might dissatisfy the patient (Hilsdon, 2012). Therefore, from this perspective, I have learnt the importance of following all the guidelines during a medical activity performance. Conclusion In conclusion, it can be said that I have practiced a wrong and unexpected activity, while dealing with a patient in my health care settings. However, I had the ability to prevent this inconvenience. From this incident, I learnt important lesion that in health care practice, everyone should perform their duty with proper monitoring and evaluation. I will take further action to prevent these kinds of inconvenience. Action Plan I would evaluate my skills through reflective practice for improving my professional skills. On the other hand, I would immediately address my inconvenience to the in-charge of the patient ward as well as to the patient and apologize for my misconduct. Further, I would follow my self-reflection checklist, where I would note all my duties for a day, and would follow the routine before and after undertaking a medical action (Howatson-Jones, 2016). It would help me to check all my deliverables in my workplace and to check all requirements more than one time.
